OK, I promised to give you some insight into why I started my “Lesser Antilles” Posting:

A few weeks ago, someone (you’ll have to read “Jimmy Buffett FAQ” to learn who and read the complete story) mentioned  the existence of a compilation tape called “The Greatest Hits of the Lesser Antilles.”

That of course got me curious, so I researched it, and found that it had been mentioned in Jimmy Buffett’s “A Salty Piece Of Land,” which I shared with you on this page.

But it goes beyond that. I got in touch with one of “those in the know” and dug deeper to discover:

Turns out, there is an “actual” tape called “The Greatest Hits of the Lesser Antilles,” and my research revealed not only the history of the tape, but all the songs included on this magical tape.

I know that there are some of you out there that might be curious enough to want to know what those songs are… Well, you’re going to have to buy the book when it comes out. This is just a small example of the things I’m running across and including in “Jimmy Buffett FAQ”

Until then, keep following our progress on this Blog….

So, today I was talking to a guy by the name of Doug Mustain. I’d called him, because he had impressed me with his knowledge of Jimmy Buffett Lyrics. We were talking about Buffett, and he told me he broke down Jimmy’s music into two eras:  “Moustache” Jimmy, and “No Moustache” Jimmy.

And you know what? It made perfect since to me. In the past, I’ve tried to compartmenalize Jimmy’s history and past for several reasons. The latest was with JBFAQ, where I almost broke it down by decades . . . but decided not to. But, I like how Doug approaches it.

If you look back at pictures of Jimmy on his albums, the Moustache left right in-between Floridays and Hot Water. And it never came back. I’ve never really heard him or anyone else talk about it either. Though, there are three times I can think of right now where he talks about facial hair in his songs: “Wish I Had a Pencil Thin Moustache” (with the cool French spelling), in “Little Miss Magic” with a little more moustache turnin’ grey, and “We Learned to Be Cool From You” when he’s either referring to the old Jimmy or Walter Cronkite.

I’m going to give it a little more thought, but I’m pretty sure, from now on, when I think about Jimmy, it’s going to be “Moustache Jimmy” and “No Moustache Jimmy.”

Thanks Doug…

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Still wondering why I brought up the Lesser Antilles? Read this excerpt from Jimmy’s Salty Piece of Land, and you’ll be a little closer to the answer. After you read it, ask yourself, “What does this make me want to know or ask?” Let’s see what kind of Parrot Head mind you have? (We’ll go on from here after comments are offered)

OK… We now know we’re talking about the “Lesser Antilles.” That was the easy part. Here’s a nice shot from Space. The island with the red dot happens to be the island of Montserrat. And we all know (shame on you if you don’t ) Jimmy’s tie to this island.

But where does the “Lesser Antilles” come into play as far as Mr. Buffett is concerned? I bet we come up with quite a few answers and ideas, but there is one certain tie in with Jimmy and the Lesser Antilles that I’m looking for.

I was lucky enough to have been a part of the initial Parrot Head Social Networking site on AOL. We had a Chat Room (which I hated). We had Bulletin Board Discussion Areas, and we had a newsletter called the Coconut Modem.

Things happened and were talked about there, that will never happen again. The peak years were between 1995 – 2000. Things changed, and the whole PH thing got too big after that. But amongst all that, there were some meaningful talks and discussions, and Jimmy Buffett Fans learned things about the PH Phenomenon and Jimmy Buffett’s music. All I’m trying to do here on this site (and the sister JBFAQ FB Page) and Club St. Somewhere, is to duplicate a little of that.

Well, I’ve run across a lot of new things I never knew about Jimmy during the book writing process. And I’d like to start a little discussion that might bring a lot of the “Knowledgeable” out in the open. In fact, it’s already starting to happen in the little weekly (Saturday) “I CAN NAME THAT JIMMY BUFFETT TUNE IN _____ CLUES.”

When I launched “JBFAQ” as I call it, we got 1400 views a week during those initial weeks. Then it expectedly dropped down in the 200 – 250 views per week. Since then, over the past two months it has slowly and steadily grown back up to the 850 – 900 views per week (which actually surprised me). So, something is happening. Let’s see where it goes from here?

Now I’m going to try something that might work. Let’s try it and see what happens. In the last few weeks, I ran across a little tidbit about our favorite calypso poet that I had been previously been only slightly exposed to, and then forgot about it. When I ran across it again, it was purely luck, and I dug deeper. What I learned was really cool and interesting. So, all I’m looking for is a little particiapation.

I know . . . you’re going, “What the F… is he talking about?” Well, hang with me, and we’ll all soon know. I know not everybody will be interested in this, and that’s OK. But a few of the people who are really interested in Jimmy will tag along, if only out of curiosity. But in that group will be some knowledgeble Buffett Fans, and will all learn something from each other. As Jimmy gets closer to retirement, this just might be our last chance to do something like this.

The map below is our clue. Put your thinking caps on. As we do, we’ll see what this has to do with Jimmy Buffett too. Be sure to share this web site and our FB Page with your friends. (Please try to keep your answers, comments, and discussions on this site, and not on the JBFAQ Facebook Page – Thank You)

Let’s start with, “Does anyone know what this chain of islands is called?”
